Number 16: Ambition – Knowing What You Want Your World to Be
“Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And – which is more – you'll be a Man, my son!”
Ambition is the commitment to change our position in the world and the world itself. President Abraham Lincoln was extremely ambitious. He had a desire to change both his position and the world. His rise to power coincided with one of the most difficult points in American history. Slavery and regional tensions were threatening to dissolve the Union, and Lincoln’s ambition was to preserve it.
Ambition requires:
1. Having and articulating a dream and vision for the future
2. Committing to overcoming the obstacles that impede one’s dream
3. Enlisting the help of one’s friends and adversaries
4. Creating passion and energy to achieve one’s dream.
