Doug Moran has more than twenty-five years of leadership experience in a variety of industries. Doug is the author of the forthcoming book, If You Will Lead: Enduring Wisdom for 21st-Century Leaders. He is also the founder of If You Will Lead, LLC. His leadership consultancy focuses on leadership development, executive coaching, organization excellence and infrastructure strategy. His book, speaking engagements, coaching and consulting leverage the power of story-telling and traditional wisdom to help leaders and their organizations excel and grow. Doug is certified by the International Coach Federation, and he recieved his professional training from Georgetown University.
Doug spent ten years with Capital One Financial Services. Most recently he was Divisional CIO for Capital One’s Financial Services Division – with domestic and international responsibilities. Doug was accountable for establishing and implementing the technology solutions for a multiple business units and for mergers, acquisitions and new business ventures. During his tenure with Capital One, Doug held numerous leadership roles.
Doug served the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia as Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Resources, Chief Operating Officer of the Department of Social Services, and Telecommunications Director. Doug began his career with Verizon where his responsibilities included operations management, strategic planning, marketing and sales.
Doug holds a Bachelor of Science degree from James Madison University. Doug is married and has two children. He is active in the community and has served on numerous boards and commissions. He is currently on the boards of the Virginia Children’s Health Insurance Program Advisory Commission and the Better Housing Coalition.
CAREER ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Team Development: Recognized and developed talent with emphasis in coaching/mentoring to build effective teams and leaders. Fostered teams of contributors to build large multi-divisional organizations of thousands of associates.
Change Leadership: Led Virginia’s welfare reform initiatives, resulting in dramatic cost savings and employment of 50,000 workers. Led numerous business programs/projects requiring fundamental shifts in processes.
Mergers and Acquisitions: Facilitated technology integration of four acquired companies into Capital One. Led entire divestiture initiative for underperforming business unit.
Information Technology and Business Integration: Established and maintained alignment between enterprise information technology and line of business (LOB) priorities. Balanced resources/timelines and negotiated trade-offs. Led information technology functions, including start-up business ventures, acquisitions, established growth businesses, and mature LOBs.
Program and Project Delivery: Directed delivery of large business-critical projects and programs. Sponsored and led 250 projects and ten large programs, with budgets exceeding $100,000,000. Established reputation for on-time and on-budget project delivery. Created transparency in information technology costs at value. Planned, targeted, and oversaw technology investments.
New Technology Introduction: Identified emerging technology innovations and business implications. Leveraged technology solutions to drive real business value. Provided vision, conceptual framework, and leadership to identify and implement solutions leveraging new and proven technologies. Piloted technologies to solve a variety of unique business problems. Consolidated subscale business applications into enterprise solutions, reducing costs and improving capabilities.
Strategic Sourcing: Established effective processes for leveraging sourcing solutions, including internal resources, long-term contractors, consultants, and off-shore representatives. Reduced costs significantly while improving quality and flexibility.
